An Associate’s Degree through Online Education

An associate’s degree is a two-year degree usually sought after for specialized skill areas. Students in associate’s degree programs are required to successfully complete 60 to 63 credit hours. In many cases, an associate’s degree program is a milestone in the journey to get higher degrees. There is a general perception that an associate’s degree is not worth much so many are uninterested. However there are reasons why you should consider getting an associate’s degree through online education. Let’s look at a few:

It can be an interim degree while you continue working on your bachelor’s degree. Even if your ultimate goal is a bachelor’s degree, you can get this two-year degree through online education first, move transferable credits into your bachelor’s degree program and continue on. For example, some online education programs offer an associate’s degree in accounting. This degree will probably teach you how to be a bookkeeper where one usually starts in this career. However, you will ultimately want to continue your education so that you can get your bachelor’s degree, MBA, and maybe get Certified Public Accountant (CPA) status. The same holds true for an associate’s degrees in the legal field. An online education two-year program could get you a degree as a paralegal. A paralegal is like a legal clerk and you are not practicing law at all. But it could be a start for you do go on and finish your education to be a full-fledged lawyer.

Getting your online education two-year degree is a good idea because you will be spending the time anyways. In other words, you are going to cross that path of 60 to 63 semester hours anyways so you might as well get a credential for it. This is the most simple if you keep the same education program such as accounting all the way through. If you change majors after you get an associate’s degree then of course it would be more complicated.

There are many different associate’s degree programs available through the different online education providers. Of course since it is online education it would be impossible to get a degree when hands-on instruction is required. Take the field of medical billing for example. You can enroll in a two-year degree program in medical billing through an online education institution. Yes, this is in the healthcare field but medical billing is a back office administrative job that rarely deals with patients therefore hands-on medical instruction is not required.
